FED: Govt to spend $120 million to shore up rural support

SYDNEY, Aug 20 AAP - The federal government will pour $120 million into regional economic
development to shore up support in the bush, according to a newspaper report today.

The Australian Financial Review says Cabinet will today consider a package to wind
back the effects of competition policy on rural areas and assist with adjustment funding.

The money, aimed at a number of marginal Queensland seats, will help the Coalition
claw back support from One Nation and Labor, the newspaper said.

Rural Australia has already been the focus of several assistance deals, including $1
billion from the National Heritage Trust for five years and $700 million to fight salinity.
