Qld: Rain delays search for missing girl

Heavy rain has forced Queensland Police to postpone a search for a teenage girl missing
in Cairns for a week.

Homicide detectives from Brisbane flew to the north Queensland city yesterday as fears
mounted for the safety of 17-year-old ANGELA MEALING, a TAFE student.

Police spokesman ERIC MEYER says police and SES volunteers had planned to search the
Gordonvale area, south of Cairns, following information provided by a police officer and
the public.

But heavy rain in the area has meant the search will have to be put off until tomorrow.

Mr MEYER says police have received a number of calls supporting the theory that the
girl may have been in the Gordonvale area in the past few weeks.

A police officer, who allegedly gave the girl a lift on the night she vanished, was
yesterday questioned over her disappearance.

Ms MEALING had last been seen walking along Mulgrave Road in Cairns heading south after a party.

Funds from an Austudy cheque, deposited into her bank account on Monday, had not been
accessed by the teeneager.

Friends have told police she had been involved in a fight with three other girls just
before she disappeared.
