Tas: Australians lost $14b gambling 2000-01
New figures reveal Australians gambled away more than $14 billion in 2000-01.
That works out at at close $989 for every Australian over the age of 18 -- a rise ofmore than $57 from the previous year.
Australian Gambling Statistics, prepared by the Tasmanian Gaming Commission from datafrom all states and territories, shows Australia's love affair with gambling continuesunabated.
Per capita, Northern Territorians are the heaviest losers, and West Australians the lightest.
Pokies swallow the most money by far, with almost $78 billion poured into the machines.
